Stand-up: Robin Williams |
Robin Williams enrolled at prestigious Juilliard to study theatre. After graduation, he performed in night clubs where he was discovered for the role of Mork on an episode of "Happy Days" (1974) and the subsequent "Mork & Mindy" (1978) TV series. This was really his big break. Robin Williams has undeniable likabitlity factor and his childish humour made him a hit with kids and adults alike. He has had countless roles in family films, and his juvenile monkeying around lead him to be the oldest person to ever play Peter Pan (when he played Peter Pan in Hook (1991). In 1996: He reached a unique milestone by having two of his films reach the $100-million mark in the US exactly the same week, Jumanji (1995) and The Birdcage (1996). Robin Williams has been quite unique in managing to maintain a funny family man persona in many child friendly hit films of the 90s. Yet, alongside his palatable acts he has still put his fast wit to good use in edgy improvisational stand-up comedy sketches.
Williams' wild comic talent involves a great deal of improvisation, following in the footsteps of his idol, Jonathan Winters. Winters' influence on the comedic style of Robin Williams is unmistakable. They use similar exploratory methods into humorous concepts, and, most striking, their speech inflections and rhythms are almost identical. Here, at International Life, we appreciate Robin Williams’ versatility as a credible stand up comic as well as a talented film actor.
Long considered a major movie star for his humorous roles, Robin Williams has grown into a fine dramatic performer, too, seen in "Moscow on the Hudson" (1984), "Dead Poets Society" (1989), "Awakenings" (1990), "The Fisher King" (1991), "One Hour Photo" and "Insomnia" (2002). He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor of 1997 in "Good Will Hunting." He was nominated for Best Actor in "The Fisher King," "Good Morning, Vietnam," and "Dead Poets Society." Ironically whilst Williams often played the misunderstood husband beloved by his children like in his seminal role as Mrs Doubtfire (1993) his own home-life was a struggle too as he battled alcoholism and cocaine abuse. He had already overcome a drug and alcohol addiction in the '80s, but suffered a relapse and eventually left rehab in September 2006.
